McDonald Commons Park

Madeira, Ohio

Sportworks Design, a division of The Kleingers Group, provided civil engineering, survey, and landscape architecture services for the redevelopment of a 14-acre park in Madeira, Ohio. This project retains existing public works while integrating new sports and recreational amenities such as synthetic and natural grass fields for soccer and baseball, two tennis courts, eight pickleball courts, and a basketball and futsal court. Enhancements include new permanent backstops, dugouts, bleacher pads, batting cages, comprehensive ADA access, and an inviting main entrance off Dawson Road.

The project also included stadium lighting, geothermal wells for the community building, reincorporating the existing Veterans Memorial into a main focal point at the park’s entrance, and stormwater management systems underneath the synthetic turf fields and underground below the parking lot, where two watersheds required two different detention basins. Unique aspects of the site included a 35 ft elevation difference from one end of the park to the other and piping in an existing local creek with a 96” pipe for approximately 300 linear feet.

Our team used community input to help shape the park’s design. The input led to a larger, custom playground featuring a Madeira staple train car with tracks around it. Other community-focused improvements include community rooms and shelter areas with new restrooms, an event lawn that acts as an amphitheater, and a farmers market and food truck pavilion. Our team kept functionality in mind throughout the process to ensure the park would cater to various community events and activities.
